Chesapeake Valor #3

The Wrath Is Coming.
But They Don't Know Where-
Or When.

Published October 3rd 2017
 by Bethany House Publishers

"The wrath is coming" were the final words that FBI agent Declan Grey heard the suicide bomber say. Now Declan is in the chase of his life--but isn't sure exactly what he's chasing after or when the threat will be unleashed on American soil. When his investigation's best clue leads him to a closed immigrant community, he turns to Tanner Shaw for assistance. She's sought justice for refugees and the displaced around the world, and if there's anyone who can help him, it's Tanner.

Tanner Shaw has joined the FBI as a crisis counselor . . . meaning she now has more opportunity to butt heads with Declan. As they work together to uncover the mounting threat, the tension between them also includes a spark she can't deny--and she's pretty sure Declan feels the same. But before anything more can develop, they find themselves in a race against time to stop the coming "wrath" that could cost thousands their lives.

Meet the Author:

Praised by New York Times best-selling author Dee Henderson as “a name to look for in romantic suspense,” Dani Pettrey has written eight novels, which have sold more than 300,000 copies. Dani combines the page-turning adrenaline of a thriller with the chemistry and happy-ever-after of a romance novel. Her novels stand out for their “wicked pace, snappy dialogue, and likable characters” (Publishers Weekly), “gripping storyline[s],” (RT Book Reviews), and “sizzling undercurrent of romance” (USA Today).
Dani’s adventure-focused Alaskan Courage series climbed the CBA best-seller lists, with Submerged staying in the top twenty for five consecutive months. The five-book series also won multiple awards, including the Daphne du Maurier Award, two HOLT Medallions, and Christian Retailing’s Best Award, among others. She turns her attention to crime and law enforcement in her home state of Maryland in her new Chesapeake Courage series, starting with Cold Shot, which Library Journal called, “a harrowing and thrilling ride.”

My Thoughts:

I absolutely loved this book.
Dani Pettrey introduced us to some incredible men in the first book of this series, Cold Shot, who grew up together and formed a bond that would last a lifetime. Declan is a FBI agent, Griffin is a detective, Parker is a CSI and Luke, well he took off in college and no one has heard from him in years.
Two months ago Declan stumbled upon some incredible evidence, a dying man's declaration, that leads him to believe there's an imminent threat against the country.  Tanner Shaw has recently been hired as a crisis counselor with the bureau and with Declan's partner being on leave of absence his boss assigns them to work together.  Declan and Tanner have not always seen eye to eye on things so he's somewhat reluctant to bring her in on this case, plus his attraction for her could be distracting to say the least.  Tanner knows Declan is not fond of her so she feels working with him is going to add a lot of tension and stress to her life that she really doesn't want or need.
I think this is my favorite book in this series, of course I say that about every book the author writes.  I have to admit with the rich backstory this series is very addicting. Even though this book is part of a series, it's an easy stand alone story.   This book is full of twists and turns that leads to spine tingling suspense.  The characters are engaging and quickly pulled me in to the story with the first page and held me until the last page was turned.  Yes, this was a one setting read for me.  This book has elements of suspense, romantic tension, turmoil, and faith.  I liked that the characters were not ashamed of their beliefs and values.
This is a book I would recommend to anyone who loves a good suspense.
**I received this book from the author via the publisher as part of their book bloggers program.  I was not required to write a positive review.  All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Here's Dani in her own words describing her new series.

My Thoughts:

This is the second installment in the Chesapeake Valor series from Dani Pettrey. She brings us a thrilling suspense that kept me on the edge of my seat.
The Chesapeake Valor series centers around 4 young boys who grew up together and formed a bond that they thought would last a lifetime.  Each had a dream of what the future held for them until one went missing. Dani Pettrey weaves words together that show how deep childhood bonds can run and how they will influence our lives as adults.
This is Parker's story.  Let me introduce you to his character:

 :

Yes, Parker is definitely a character that's easy to love.  He also has a past that he can't forget.
The only problem is, how do you move on from a tragedy that has defined you?

Meet Avery Tate:

 :

I loved this story!!
The setting is the Chesapeake Shore and this story centers around Parker and Avery. As the story opens Avery is finding things more complicated than she ever imagined and turns to Parker for his help.  This gripping thriller flows effortlessly with twists and turns that keep you guessing until the end.  These characters while strong and well developed are also very complex.  Parker on the surface seems like a dream, but he's hiding a past that he can neither forget nor forgive himself for.  He's known as a guy who just can't commit, but few know the true story. Avery Tate is a beautiful, young woman who has literally beat the odd and  is a girl with a checkered past.  She grew up in a less than desirable neighborhood and ran away from home at a young age. At the age of 19 she was introduced to Christ and it changed her life completely.  Unfortunately the past has a way of sneaking up and smacking you in the face and for Avery this is very true.
The author has a unique talent for penning a story that literally comes to life.  This story has elements of forgiveness, romantic tension, mystery, suspense, faith and love.  Each element will pull the reader in deeper into the story.
This is a book I would recommend to anyone who loves a good suspense, but I will warn you that once you pick it up you won't want to put it down.
** I received this book from the publisher.  I was not required to write a positive review.  All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

Sins of the Past

Sins of the Past
Expected publication: May 3rd 2016
 by Bethany House Publishers

Synopsis:

Secrets and Lies. Danger That Will Never Go Away.
Join Three Beloved Masters of Romantic Suspense for Novellas Where the Past Will Not Stay Buried.

Dee Henderson - "Missing"A Wyoming sheriff is called to Chicago when his elderly mother goes missing from her retirement community. Paired with a savvy Chicago cop, the two soon launch into a race against the clock when they realize something dark may lie at the heart of the disappearance.

Dani Pettrey - "Shadowed"Adventure, romance, and danger collide when a young Alaskan fisherman nets the body of a Russian open water swimming competitor. Another swimmer, who'd been the dead woman's roommate years ago, is pulled into the search for answers as it grows more and more clear that something sinister is at play.

Lynette Eason - "Blackout"A young woman once implicated in a robbery gone wrong finds herself at risk years later when the real culprit is up for parole. The loot taken that night has never been found and he believes she knows where it's hidden--only her memory of that night has always been unreliable. Can she remember enough to find her way to safety?

My Thoughts:

This is a collection of three novellas by three extremely talented authors.
Each is a suspenseful romance that revolve around a past mistake or choice.  Each is a wonderful story.
We start with Missing by Dee Henderson which is set in Chicago. John Graham, police chief in Cheyenne, Wyoming has been notified by the Riverside PD that his mother has been reported missing by the manager of Riverside Retirement Village.  Upon arrival he concludes that Lieutenant Sharon Noble of the Missing Persons Division has pulled in all available resources to search for his mother.  He must confess his greatest concern is whether his past undercover work has spilled over on to his mother now.  Even before leaving Wyoming he had reached out to old friends to start investigating his old cases to look for a connection.  The problem is they are facing the same as Riverside PD all dead ends.

The second story, Shadowed, by Dani Pettrey takes us to Yancey, Alaska where Libby Jennings arrives to compete in a cold-water swimming competition.  On her downtime she signed up for a whale-watching tour.  During the tour a body is discovered who turns out to be one of Libby's fellow competitor, Russian open water swimmer Katarina Stanic.  Ben McKenna, head of Yancey's Search and Rescue, immediately suspects foul play due to finger mark bruising on her neck.  As the investigation begins accusations are leveled toward Libby because they were strong competitors.  No one knew the true history between Libby and Kat, but Libby was determined to assist with finding her murderer. Unfortunately someone thinks she knows too much and intends to shut her up before it's too late.

The third story, Blackout, comes from Lynette Eason.  She introduces us to Macey Adams who is haunted by her past.  6 years ago she lost her memory after a horrific attack in her apartment.  With being unable to remember not only her past but also her attack she fled Texas in hopes of starting over. With each move the feeling of being pursued followed her and frightened her.  She has currently moved to the east coast, but danger is lurking.  It could be in the form of her stalker or it could be the Cat 3 Hurricane bearing down on coast.

Wow, what a collection!!
If you like suspense then this book is definitely for you.  Each story contains complex characters with real issues and edge of your seat suspense.  Each author brings an engaging plot that flows effortlessly with plenty of twists and turns.  This book brings elements of mystery, suspense, romance and faith.  This is definitely a book I would recommend to anyone who loves suspense.
** I received this book from the publisher via Netgalley for a honest review without bias or outside influence.  All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Four Best Friends.
And Then One Went Missing . . .

Cold Shot - Book 1 - Chesapeake Valor series by Dani Pettrey
In college, Griffin McCray and his four best friends had their lives planned out. Griffin and Luke Gallagher would join the Baltimore PD. Declan Gray would head to the FBI, and Parker Mitchell would go on to graduate school as a crime scene analyst. But then Luke vanished before graduation and their world–and friendships–crumbled.
Now Griffin is a park ranger at Gettysburg, having left life as a SWAT-team sniper when a case went bad. The job is mostly quiet–until the day he captures two relic hunters uncovering skeletal remains near Little Round Top. Griffin just wants the case to go away, but charming forensic anthropologist Finley Scott determines that the body is modern–a young social justice lawyer missing since spring–and all evidence points to the work of an expert sniper.
When FBI agent Declan Gray takes over the case, past and present collide. Griffin soon realizes he’ll need to confront some of the darkest days of his life if he–and those he cares about–are going to escape a downward spiral of murder that crosses continents.

Dani Pettrey brings us a new series, Chesapeake Valor.
Her she is in an interview talking about the new series:

Meet Griffin and Finley:

Meet Griffin McCray from Cold Shot by Dani Pettrey

Meet Finley Scott from Cold Shot by Dani Pettrey

My Thoughts:

Cold Shot is the first installment in the series and is filled with spine tingling suspense and a budding romance.  After reading Cold Shot I'm convinced she has penned another success.
With this being the first book we are introduced the characters that will make up this series and learn a little of their background that brings them to where they are in their lives now.  We are introduced to friends who grew up together and formed a bond that they thought would last a life time.  Dani Pettrey shows how deeply entwined childhood friendships can form the person you will become as an adult.
As this story opens we meet Griffin McCray, Chief Ranger at the Gettysburg National Military Park, finding a routine patrol and perimeter check of the park more complicated than he ever imagined.  He discovered two relic hunters who have just dug up skeletal remains near the archaeological Civil War battlefield site dig.  Unfortunately while trying to secure the site until Dr. Scott could arrive he notices soft tissue on some of the remains which means this is not Civil War grave, but a modern one.
Dr. Finely Scott arrives on the scene and with great certainty that this is a recent vs. Civil War grave site she give the go ahead to alert the Bureau since it was on federal land.  Griffin put in a call to Declan Grey.  Griffin avoids reminders of his past, but somethings you couldn't severe like childhood friends.  Finely calls in her CSI guy, Parker Mitchell, and begins mapping a primary grid.  With the arrival of everyone and tension so thick you could cut it with a knife Finley got to work examining the remains and determined they were dealing with a modern body dump.  And the adventure begins.
This story is a suspenseful romance that will keep you on the edge of your seat.  The author's ability to weave words together that bring not only the setting, but also the characters to life is amazing. I was pulled in from the very first page.  The plot is full of twists and turns that kept me guessing until the end of the story. The characters are well developed and have real issues. Griffin has a troubled past from loosing his sister to a horrific crime, a betrayal from his best friend and an innocent woman's death from his failure to act quickly.  He has a lot of built of anger and likes to push everyone away to avoid getting hurt again.  Finely is a beautiful, young woman, who by all appearances, has everything you could ask for (nice home, job security, etc.), but looks can be deceiving.  Finley has survived this past year by the grace of God, but she keeps reliving the nightmares of all she has endured.  Both have secrets, well, not really secrets.  They both have pasts that they don't like talking about.  Is it out of fear or because they haven't forgiven themselves.
I could go on and on about how good the story line is, but I also want to talk about the message I received from this story.  It is one of forgiveness. As we are reminded in Ephesians 4:32
Be kind and compassionate to one another,
forgiving each other,
just as in Christ God forgave you.
I was so impressed at how the author brings this out in the telling of a story.  This message is one we can take with us and apply to our own lives.
This is a book that I would recommend to anyone.
