Uncommon Justice #2

Always Look Twice

Published October 1st 2019 by Revell

Justice lies just on the other side of fear
At the advice of her therapist, Harper Reynolds has traded her job as a crime scene photographer for a more peaceful life taking photographs of the natural world. But her hopes for a life surrounded by the serenity of the outdoors are dashed when she inadvertently captures a murder being committed. She flees the scene in fear--and loses the camera.

Former Green Beret Heath McKade, a reserve deputy in an understaffed county, has been called in to protect Harper, a childhood friend he is surprised to see back in the area. When Harper learns that the sheriff's department can't find any evidence of the murder she witnessed, she is determined to do what she can to see that justice is done. What neither Harper nor Heath could know is how many explosive secrets from the past will be exposed--or how deeply they will fall for each other.

My Thoughts:

Wow!!!
What an amazing book from Elizabeth Goddard in her Uncommon Justice series!
Goddard is a favorite author of mine, in fact I reread a lot of her books because I have enjoyed them so much.  She has a talent for weaving words together that bring the plot, setting, and characters to life for me.
This is the second book in this series, but for me it's an easy stand alone story.  Yes, there is a common thread, but it's not necessary to read the first book.  I do encourage everyone to read the first book to get a full impact of the series, but it's not necessary to have read the first one to enjoy this one.
In this book we meet Harper Reynolds and Heath McKade.
Harper has had a troubled life and has taken a leave from her job as a crime scene photographer to deal with all the trauma she has seen. She and her sister have been traveling and visiting national parks. She has witnessed the after effects of crime, but the one the has hung on for years was the murder of her father when she was a child.
Heath owns and runs Emerald M Guest Ranch in Grayback, Wyoming.  He has his own ghosts.  He's a former Green Beret with his own troubled childhood.  He has returned to own childhood home to make it into something more than what he remembered.
 Memories linger.
Both characters are strong and complex. Harper once described herself as a survivor.  She shows her strength of character as she seeks justice for a woman who no longer has a voice.  Unfortunately that puts her in the crosshairs of a murderer and danger is all around her.
Heath is a protector, but lately he feels anything but.  It seems like every time he tries to help something goes wrong, but this time there's more on the line. He sees a woman in distress, but this isn't just any woman. She's a woman from his past.
I loved this book, in fact it may be my favorite from this author.  It is a fast paced story packed with explosive suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat and turning the pages.  The setting comes to life through the vivid descriptions and obvious research of the area.  This books has elements of suspense, mystery, a touch of romance, and faith.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves suspense.  For me this was a one setting read, meaning when I started reading I just couldn't put it down.

When I picked this book up I literally couldn't put it down.  I read through the entire book in one day and planned the next day to get my review posted, but unfortunately that didn't happen.  I ended up sick, thanks to my children, and in bed for a few days.  Yes, I know everyone has been there.  When I started feeling better I started to write my review, but didn't feel I could give it a proper review so I picked my book back up and read it again.

My Thoughts:

This is suspense at it's best!!
I have been reading Elizabeth Goddard's books from LIS for years so I was excited to see she was writing a series for Revell.  Her books are best known for the edge of your seat suspense, complex characters, engaging plots, faith, and a touch of romance and that's what I like most.  Honestly, this book meets all that criteria and more.
This story starts in Washington state where we meet Willow Anderson.  She is a Forensic Geneaologist who was raised by her grandfather after her parents was killed.  Willow followed in her grandfather's footsteps in her career and was also his business partner.  After his death she wants to honor his memory and begans to look at the last case he was working and hopes to close the case for him.  Unfortunately this one is a little different because it involves an abduction in Texas of a baby from years ago and this one involves living people which is something that very seldom happens.  Another thing that is of concern to her is the fact that her grandfather had contacted Austin McKade, who is someone from her past, but with his FBI contacts maybe he could offer clues of where to start with the case.
Austin McKade has been out of the area for a while working on a case, but not for the FBI.   He's currently working with ex-agents called independent special agents.  He could investigate and provide protection, but he no longer arrest anyone.  He had received a message from J.T. Anderson about needing some assistance, but it would have to wait until he returned to Washington.  Unfortunately, before his return he received word of J.T.'s death and the explosion/fire at his home.  His thoughts immediately went to Willow and knew he wouldn't rest until he could talk to her.
The house explosion/fire was suspicous and under investigation.  Austin knows there's more to this and plans to find answers while keeping Willow safe, whether she wants his help or not.
This wonderful book has so many elements of mystery, suspense, and emotions that I was totally captivated by it.  Once I started it I couldn't put it down.  The author gives a rich backstory, an incredible setting, complex characters with real issues, romantic tension, twists and turns, faith, and a delicious tale where characters find things more complicated than they ever imagined.  This is a book I would recommend to anyone who love suspense.

February Releases Part 1

Have you ever has a favorite author or maybe a series you're reading and wonder how long do I have to wait for the next book?  Well, I do all the time.  Then I will see a review and think how did I miss this one.  Today I'm going to post about books that will be released from some publishing houses that I'm looking forward to reading or at least buying to put in my TBR pile.  Remember some of these books come with gifts if you pre-order them.  I know Never Let Go has a link to it, so let me know if you would like it.
As most who follow my blog know I love suspense, but I also enjoy many other genres.  I love reading, but I want a good, clean read.  I want to be drawn into the story.  Many authors I review do this with ease by just weaving words together that bring both character and setting to life.  Occasionally I will read a book blurb and become interested to only find while reading the author sometimes adds explicit scenes. While I don't particularly like this, by no way does it come into play when I'm writing a review.
Here are just a few that will be released in February and next Friday I will bring more being released in February.  Can you guess I am going to need a new bookshelf.lol

Okay, here we go.......

My Thoughts:

Elizabeth Goddard is one of my favorite authors.  She writes my favorite genres and I know the way she weaves words together always brings both the characters and setting to life for me.  Her plots are edge of your seat suspense, but she also brings a faith element to the story.
This is the third installment in the Coldwater Bay Intrigue series, but it's easily a stand alone book in my opinion.
For me, this was a spectacular read!
From the first page I was drawn in and captivated until the last page was turned.Once I got started, I didn't want to put it down.  So for that to me, I classified it as a one sitting read.
Cora Strand is a young woman who accepted a job 2 months ago as a shipwreck archaeologist on board the research vessel Sea Dragon. Being a member of the science team is her dream job.  She has a passion for the sea and what she can find and learn from ships that have gone down.  Some do this for treasure hunting, but for her the treasure is in finding and researching history.
Kirk Higgins was hired on the Sea Dragon as part of the dive team.  With his impressive archaeological credentials, diving skills, and having served in the Navy getting the job was not the problem, but keeping his real purpose for being there a secret might be.  He's looking for answers to the disappearance of his childhood friend, Drake Jackson.
Both are strong characters that will pull on your heart strings.  I liked that Cora has a strong faith and isn't afraid to lean on God for guidance for strength and guidance.  Kirk has to face the fact that he has always had feelings for Cora and that he had literally pushed her away years ago.  He has a tough exterior, but also a softer side.
This book has elements of faith, trust issues, crisis of faith, romantic tension, spine tingling suspense, unexpected twists, turmoil, and love.  It's a book I would recommend to anyone who loves suspense.

My Thoughts:

Elizabeth Goddard has released the fourth installment in her Wilderness, Inc. series.  This book is probably my favorite in the series, but then again I have loved them all.  This series is set in southwest Oregon surrounding the Rogue River.  Ms. Goddard weaves her words to together that bring the story to life for me.  The setting explodes to life with her vivid use of imagery.  This story centers around Alice Wilde who works at Wilderness, Inc. as a guide.  Until an unfortunate accident on the Rogue River she mostly guided white water rafters, but she hadn't been back on the river since.  When a client enlisted her services for a off-trail adventure they had spent 3 days in the Oregon mountains doing their best to avoid poison oak.  Suddenly Alice stumbles upon suspicious activity which leads her to an illegal growing operation and when she is spotted by the growers finds herself dodging bullets and literally on the run for her life.

Griffin Slater is a civilian photojournalist since a traumatic brain injury ended his military career.  3 years ago  he arrived in Wild Rogue Wilderness region to rest after his injury, but has returned  on a journalistic project regarding illegal marijuana grown on public land.  When receiving a call from Sheriff Kruse about a possible lead.  The problem with this lead is it came from a trained wilderness guide and that put her life endanger.

The plot is fast paced and flows effortlessly.  This story deals with the issue of the illegal use of our public lands to grow marijuana.  Millions of acres of public lands are being overrun with illegal marijuana growing operation, resulting in degraded habitat and toxic trash that leads directly to wildlife deaths and serious threats to local water supplies.  These people make millions of dollars with these operations and they will take whatever necessary precautions to prevent their growing sites from being shut down.
This book is a edge of your seat suspense that kept me turning the pages.  I would describe it as a one sitting read, which means when I picked it up I was captivated until the last page was turned.  I was drawn into the story and could feel the fear, joy, and turmoil of the characters.  The plot has unexpected twists and turns.  The characters strong and well developed.  Alice was hurt in the past and has a difficult time trusting.  Griffin feels he's damaged and not good at relationships.  They are both easy to love.  This story has elements of mystery, suspense, romantic tension and faith. This is a book I would recommend to anyone who loves suspense.

My Review:

This suspenseful series is set in southwest Oregon in the Siskiyou Mountains.
Elizabeth Goddard masterfully brings the setting alive with vivid imagery.
The plot is an spine tingling suspense that is full of twists and turns.
This is the third book in the series, but is easily a stand alone.  I would recommend reading the first two books to get the full impact of the series.
This story centers around Olivia Kendrick, Rich Kendrick and Zach Long.
Rich and Zach are best friends.  Rich was engaged to Zach's sister Sarah until she was killed 3 years ago.  Rich was devastated and hired on with a private military contractor in the middle east to put some distance between him and the tragedy.  Olivia was a biology teacher in Portland, but with the death of her mother retreated to the vacation home located outside of Giddeon in the Siskiyou Mountains.  She went to work for Wilderness, Inc. as a guide for the adventure excursion company.  Zach Long was a Portland Police Detective until a year ago when he resigned from the job.
Rich's unexpected arrival in Giddeon is a surprise to Olivia, but she hopes he will stay for a while so they can work through the past turmoil.  Arriving at home she knows something is wrong and that Rich is in trouble.  Following a blood trail behind the house and into the mountains the very last person she expects is to run into is Zach Long.  Rich called Zach 3 days ago needing help and Zach rushed to the secluded cabin where they had vacationed together.  Unfortunately the heart pounding adventure is about to begin for Olivia and Zach.
I loved Olivia and Zach.  Olivia is a strong woman who has learned to depend on no one but herself.  She has a gentle heart and a warm personality.  Zach comes from a long line of police officers in the family so he's a natural born protector.
This story has many elements of spine tingling supsense, mystery, romance, and faith.

My Opinion:

I have been reading books by Elizabeth Goddard for years.  I love her detailed ability to weave words together that bring both setting and characters to life for me.
This book is the second installment in the new Wilderness, Inc. series which is set in southwest Oregon surrounding the Rogue River.  The place literally explodes to life on the pages with the wonderful use of imagery.
She introduces us to USFW Special Agen5t Grayson Wilde and Gemma Rollins.  This plot is fast paced and flows effortlessly.  This story deals with the tough issue of wildlife trafficking. Grayson is going undercover at Tiger Mountain to investigate the latest rumors of wildlife trafficking and to find the person who murdered a fellow agent.  Gemma is the founder of the tiger refugee and has been dealing with problems of sabotage at her sanctuary.
As the story opens Gray rescues Gemma just before her Jeep is swept down the mountain side.  After a less than desirable meeting Gemma hires Gray as a volunteer at the santuary, but the answers Gray is looking for appear to be just out of reach.  The deeper he digs the more involved he becomes in Gemma's life and starts to suspect that her life is possibly in danger.  Suddenly answers are not as important as protecting her life.
This is a wonderful adventure and kept me turning the pages until the end.  The plot is very intriguing and kept me guessing until the end.  This is the second book in the series, but for me this is also a stand alone story and one I would recommend to anyone who loves suspense.
