Pray for the remnant that survives.
~2 Kings 19:4

Raging StormIn the Darkness,
Anarchy Awakens

When a massive solar flare wiped out all modern technology across the globe, the small town of Abney, Texas, was thrown into chaos. Shelby Sparks and her teenage son, Carter, have found refuge, but Shelby knows she can't simply remain hidden forever. Carter is a type 1 diabetic in need of insulin—and Shelby will risk her life traveling to Austin to make sure he gets it.

Shelby's best friend and high school sweetheart, Max Berkman, won't even consider letting her make the perilous journey alone. Together, they manage to get to the capital—only to discover that while things are desperate in Abney, Austin has turned into an urban nightmare on the brink of anarchy.

Shelby and Max's search for medical supplies will lead them into terrifying territory, where the only thing more uncertain than finding what they need is the hope of making it out of the city alive.

Gabe must race against a cataclysmic solar clock if he hopes to be in position when the blackout descends.

My Thoughts:

This is the second installment in The Remnant Series from Vannetta Chapman and I would recommend reading the first book, Deep Shadows, also.
The cover gives the reader a glimpse of the chilling story it contains.
This gripping dystopian series is set in Texas just after a massive solar flare has hit.  The solar flare has knocked out the communication grid which includes electricity and communication.  This story centers around Shelby Sparks, her son Carter and Max Berkman.
When the flare first hit, June 10th, Shelby was determined to stay in their town of Abney and see this crisis through, but as things began to deteriorate rapidly Max convinced her they needed to go to his parents ranch.  Shelby's greatest concern hadn't changed even after arriving at the ranch, she still needed to locate Carter's much needed insulin.  She made the decision to travel to Austin, the capitol, in search of the much needed medication. This is a fast paced story about Shelby's journey to the capitol in search of the much needed medication for her son.
This is a story that stayed with me even after closing the last page.
I am not a person who really likes dystopian books, but I must admit I am hooked on this series. For me the characters are so easy to relate to.  Shelby is a mother of a teenage son with a chronic illness and I also have a teenage son with a chronic illness so I could feel her character's emotions and thoughts.  I can imagine I would do whatever it took to obtain medications for my child.  She encounters a rapidly deteriorating society outside of their refuge and learns that the life she once knew was gone.  I loved how Shelby kept her faith in God during all the trials she encounters.
This is a wonderful book with a plot that will quickly pull the reader in.  I will warn you that you need to be prepared to read this book in one setting because when you open it up you won't want to put it down.  This book brings elements of mystery, suspense, love, forgiveness, and faith. I would recommend it to anyone.

My Thoughts:

Let me start by saying this was a very intriguing book.  I saw it available on Netgalley and loved the cover, which is what initially drew me in.  When I read the book blurb it drew me in further so I knew I had to read this book.
When I opened it I was immediately drawn into the story.  The plot is something that I have long worried might happen, the collapse of not only technology, but our very way of life.  I know most people believe that it's an impossibility with all the backups, but let me ask you this what if it did happen?  What if you were suddenly without the basic necessities for living?  Scary when you really think of it.
This story takes place in modern day and brings us the engaging story of Shelby Sparks and Max Berkman, who are both neighbors and close friends for years.  Shelby's character touched me more than I can describe.  She is the mother of a teenage son who has a life long health issue, diabetes.  She has learned and taught her son how to live with the disease, but that doesn't mean the worry goes away.  When a solar flare hits her first thought is of him and how to ensure he gets his medication and a somewhat healthy diet to maintain his blood sugar.  Max made a decision years ago that impacted his relationship with Shelby, but it didn't change his feelings so when the flare hits she and her son is his first concern.  Both are faced to make decisions and sacrifices in order to survive, but neither loose their faith.
We are introduced to strong, engaging characters that after finishing the book I found myself still thinking about.  The plot flows effortlessly and swallowed me heart and soul.  I kept putting myself in the story line and thinking what if.  I could go on and on about how much I loved this book, but I would only be repeating myself.  The book has elements of mystery, spine tingling suspense, faith and a mild romance.  I would recommend this book to anyone.

The next book in this series will be Raging Storm and the expected publication is Feb., 2017.  Here is the book blurb:

In this second book in an eerily plausible, action-packed dystopian series, survival will be threatened and faith will be put to the ultimate test as a raging storm engulfs America.
