Book Description:
Growing up, goody-two-shoes Kirra Jacobs and troublemaker Reef McKenna were always at odds. Now, working together as search-and-rescue for Alaska's arduous Iditarod race, a growing attraction seems to be forcing aside old arguments. Then Reef catches Kirra sneaking from camp in the middle of the night.
Kirra's uncle, a musher in the race, has disappeared. Kirra and Reef quickly track the man, but what they discover is harrowing: Frank's daughter has been kidnapped. Kirra and Reef, along with the entire McKenna family, are thrown into a race to stop a shadowy villain who is not only threatening a girl's life--but appears willing to unleash one of the largest disasters Alaska has ever seen.
My Review
Wow!! I loved this book!
I have been waiting for Reef's story and it's finally here.
Dani Pettrey's talent with weaving words together brings an edge of your seat suspense interlaced with a wonderful romance. The vivid imagery and strong, well developed characters will readily pull you in and the fast paced storyline will keep you turning the pages. Dani Pettrey's books will always take you on an adventure, but there's also a message of faith that can be applied in our own lives.
Yancey is a small town in Alaska where everyone knows everyone. After finishing college Kirra Jacobs returned to her hometown to set up her veterinary practice, but she is also active on the SAR (Search and Rescue) team using her skills with dogs.
With the Alaskan Iditarod race taking place her skills are in great need so she is being paired with fellow SAR member Reef McKenna to be on the ready in case a musher gets into trouble. Kirra has known Reef and his dare devil ways since elementary school and hopes he will take this assignment seriously. She is a young woman with a troubled past who has major trust issues, esp. men, so this will be a difficult assignment for her.
When Kirra's uncle Frank, a musher, turns up missing she throws common sense aside to search for him, but Reef steps in to help her. Reluctant at first to accept his assistance Kirra finally agrees and at the first sign of trouble she is actually glad she did.
Reef depends on his faith and God's direction in all his actions, but knows his reputation is stained by his past actions and that he has a lot to prove if he wants Kirra to trust him.
Suddenly events have turned and instead of them searching and rescuing they are playing detectives in a race against time.
This is a story of friendship, courage, trust and a crisis of faith. Full of twists and turns with an intriguing mystery that will keep you entertained. I would recommend this book to anyone. Even though this story is part of a series, it's an easily stand alone book. The message I received from this story is that sometimes we must let go and let God lead us in the direction we were meant to go, because he truly knows what is best for us.
I received this book from both Bethany House and the author for a honest review without bias as stated above.

DeleteKatrina-- what a beautiful review! I love how you pulled this from the book's themes: "sometimes we must let go and let God lead us in the direction we were meant to go, because he truly knows what is best for us." So very true, and for that I am grateful. Thanks for being such an important part of the McKenna journey, Katrina! ~Amanda
ReplyDeleteAmanda, so glad you were able to stop by. I always look for a message. To me that is what makes a book a wonderful read. Yes, I am so glad that God leads us. No, we don't always want to let go, but God knows much better than we do where we need to be. I have loved each adventure the McKennas took us on and being a part of Dani's team. Thank you for all your help. Blessings
