Get Your Teenager Talking

Get Your Teenager Talking: Everything You Need to Spark Meaningful Conversations
5 Stars

This is a wonderful, informational book that will help anyone spark a conversation with young teens today.

Book Description

Are you and your favorite teenager having too many conversations like this?

"How was school?"
"Fine."
"Soccer practice?"
"Same as always."
"Anything interesting happen today?"
"Nope."
"Nice talking with you!"

Let's face it. Teenagers have a PhD in one-word answers . . . if we don't ask the right questions.

In this book, veteran youth expert Jonathan McKee shares 180 creative discussion starters to help teens open up about issues that matter. You'll also find tips for interpreting their responses and follow-up questions. From light-hearted to more serious, these conversation springboards will encourage even the most reluctant teen to talk about friends, school, values, struggles, and much more.

My Review

Jonathan McKee has written an excellent book that will help anyone spark a conversation with young teens today.  Today children face so many more distractions, for want of a better word, than the previous generations.  Social media has taken the world by storm and with it our children.  I am the parent of two children, one is 13 and the other 17.  Communication is one of the keys in dealing with children whether you are a parent, youth leader, teacher, coworker, or mentor.
Just as professionals learn how to talk with clients, depending upon the field they are in, a parent must learn how to talk to their children at any age. I feel that open communication is one of the keys to parenting. This author explores the way in which to approach the teen on many different levels that will help the child open up. There are so many issues today that our teens face that we as adults didn't have to deal with. With that being said as I am sure parents know today's teens still need the same things they did growing up love and guidance. This is an excellent book that will help open the doors of dialogue up with teens. It's written in excellent format in that if you are having a problem you can just flip to the sections that best helps at the moment. It's easy to understand. I would recommend it to anyone ( parents, teachers, youth counselors, etc.) I received this book from Bethany House as a gift to give an honest review with no outside bias or influence.
